Thursday 13

Because this is a meme whose purpose is to get to know "me" a little better, this weeks topic is 13 random things about me.

  1. I was named after my Father. My first and middle name is his name reversed and feminine. There was no particular reason my name was spelled with one L, but I like it spelled that way. Michele with one L.
  2. My nickname when I was very young was Rubberband because I was very tall and skinny and limber. Those were the days.
  3. I met Barry Manilow years ago while vacationing in Palm Springs. He was not a nice man and I've not liked him ever since. He's really creepy looking in person too.
  4. I did high jump in grade school and I was pretty good at it. I remember once competing at a meet and suddenly people were milling around and making a lot of noise. Dwight Stones was there and I'm not sure I even knew who he was at the time but I met him. I remember he was tall and had longer hair. He is in the USA Track & Field Hall of Fame. Besides this time in my life, i'm really not very athletic.
  5. I love Bobbi Brown cosmetics. I have just started using her products in the last year or so. Every product I use, I absolutely love.
  6. I cut off my middle finger tip when I was 12 years old. I sat down on a canvas cross chair and it snapped. I had to have surgery because the tip could be sewed back, but I broke the tip of the bone. I had to wear a cast to my elbow for about 8 weeks. Surprisingly, the finger took, It looks normal and the nail grows. The only sign is a small scar across the tip and the finger tip dips in because the bone is gone.
  7. The only food item that does not agree with me at all is Dijon mustard. It's so odd, but if I eat dijon mustard or a sauce has it in it, it 9 times out of ten does not agree with me. I taste it for days. No kidding. It's a shame too because I really like Dijon.
  8. I  used to raise chickens, laying hens when I lived in Oregon. I miss my chickens. I loved them so.
  9. I chose the Saint name Valentine when I was Confirmed. I've always been into the romance.
  10. My favorite place that I've visited was St.Thomas in the Caribbean. I went on a cruise years ago with some female coworkers and we had a lot of fun. St.Thomas was so gorgeous. The turquoise water, the white sand. It had a different feel.
  11. My favorite food is cheese. Which I am not suppose to be eating right now. I'm doing OK staying away from it, but I miss it, always.
  12. My new favorite TV show is Modern Family, with The Middle right behind it. Soooo funny!
  13. My favorite band in high school was Rush. Totally in love with them and I have gone to eight of their concerts. Once, while kind of between boyfriends, I dated a guy because he asked me to a Rush concert. I was not so much into him but I wanted to go to the concert. The boyfriend found out about it too and was not happy.

Thursday Thirteen

Valentine's Day is fast approaching and so I wanted to list 13 things that I think is sweet.
  1. The book Illusions by Richard Bach. A quick read, but very thought provoking. Have you found your blue feather?
  2. Lindt truffles. I love that you can find this quality of chocolate at Target or an everyday store. If you haven't tried Lindt chocolate I'd say to try it. Good quality and not a huge price.
  3. Cupcakes. It seems to have become a fad but I love cupcakes because they are cute and sweet. My personal favorite cupcake blog, complete with recipes.
  4. Plurk friends. Sometimes it can really change your day by just reading a kind word.
  5. Cats sleeping. There is something so sweet and cuddly about how my babies sleep, how they can be comfortable in the wierdest positions.
  6. Crepes w/Lingonberries.
  7. Someone saying you are precious to them.My special someone told me that yesterday and it meant the world to me.
  8. People giving of themselves  for people suffering in Haiti, even when they don't have much to begin with. It's time like this that you realize how fortunate you are.
  9. Boyd's Bears. I have a collection of their collectible figurines and i also have some plush toys. They are just so sweet and cute and have funny names.
  10. Sweethearts Candy. They are still around after all these years. The messages have been updated, that's for sure, with messages like Text Me or Tweet Me, and the candy seems to taste better, but they are still the same in many ways. They just signal that Valentine's is near when I see them in the store.
  11. A single rose. It doesn't have to be red. It doesn't have to be long stem. It doesn't even have to be a rose. A flower given with love, so that the recipient enjoys is a sweet thing.
  12. Valentine's Cards. I still really love picking out a special card for my special someone. Here's a different kind of sweet card for Valentines!
  13. A smile. You know that smile that makes their eyes twinkle, where you see what they are saying just by how they look at you. That is sweet!

Thursday Thirteen

My list of 13 items that make life worth living, small things that can be truly enjoyed.
  1. A 12 year old Glen Fidditch. It's a sipping drink for me. I love to feel the burn at first, it warms you all the way to your toes. Lovely after a special meal.
  2. A perfectly grilled cheese sandwich. It can't be too dark but it should have butter on the outside to toast it nicely and give flavor and the cheese, american, melted just perfectly where it still oozes a little when cut.
  3. A Lindt truffle. My favorite is white chocolate, but the peanut butter ones are damn good.
  4. A new romance novel. It's perfect for rainy days like today. I love digging into a new book and getting a feel for the writing and get the characters and scene set in my mind.
  5. A nice hot shower. Soothing.
  6. Perfumed oils. Preferably they are perfumed with real essential oils. You can feel the difference in the quality of oil and the scent is pure and lasts longer.
  7. Comfy slippers. I got a new pair for Christmas and I can wear them to the store or around the house. They have real wool inside and keep my tootsies warm.
  8. A kind word from a special someone. Just that can make your day.
  9. A perfectly brewed cup of ginger tea. It's warming and comforting. I have to go make some now.
  10. Good quality sheets and duvets. I love my bed right now, it's so comfy, cool when I first get in and then my 400 count sheets and duvet wrap me up and warm me.
  11. Tiger Balm~I've had some joint aches but this helped take the pain away.
  12. Knitting/Crocheting, it's always soothing and comforting for me to have my hands busy creating something.
  13. Cashmere. I love the feel of my cashmere sweaters, they are so comforting and they last well.
Please leave me a comment so I can come visit you!

Thursday 13

Mamacita took the day off work yesterday and we went to the County Fair. This list is 13 things I liked or enjoyed about the fair. If you'd like to participate in Thursday 13, please go here first.
  1. There was a nice breeze down there and it was not so ungodly hot. It was actually feeling warmer in some of the buildings.
  2. Pink's Hot Dogs! I couldn't believe it but they were down there. So I didn't have to go to the west side of town or wait in line for a long time. Had my Martha Stewart dog without onion or relish thank you!
  3. Loved the textile show, enjoyed seeing what others are doing. There was not a lot of knit items, and the ones I saw were not so great. I'm so entering next year and see how I fair.
  4. There were 2 pigs who had babies! One had 10 just this last Saturday and they were so cute! Another had 11 almost 2 weeks ago and they were double the size.
  5. I loved seeing the plumeria plants and they had an unusual dark pink color. Hard not to buy, but it was $30 for a starting.
  6. Loved smelling the barbecue. There was some huge companies there and the smell was intoxicating.
  7. Love to see the entries of vegetables. There were huge squash and interesting heirloom veggies. I wondered how many of the items wander off? Not that I'd do that, but I couldn't help but wonder.
  8. They had a wine bar! We were able to try a couple tastings of award winning wines which were very good. And then we enjoyed a full glass on the patio and took a break. It was nice.
  9. Rootbeer Freezes....yum!
  10. Love to see the odd things you can find by the vendors. There were weird mops and car washers, a doohicky you put on a aluminum can to make it like a screw top, a candle that does not use open flame, but a lightbulb, etc.
  11. Watkins. I'm sure there is a way to order online or whatever, but I like finding them at the fair and buying my vanilla, cinnamon and black pepper. Instant gratification.
  12. I bought a carry all. It's kind of goofy, but the thing is so cool too. It's like a wire frame with a large bag on it. It's light, it moves well, it doesn't topple over, it fits all kinds of stuff and I thought it'd be a lot more, so when she told me how much, which was at least half of what I was thinking, I bought it. Mamacita can use it for work because she has a little walk from her parking lot.
  13. Not sure how I made it out of the fair without ingesting something fried, but I did. I do so still love fried things. A new item I saw was individually fried potato chips. They looked good. I wanted a funnel cake too.
The only thing I was a little disappointed by was that I wanted some grilled corn but I think since living in MN at one time I've been spoiled. This corn they served looked like field corn. It was almost gray in color, not a nice vibrant yellow and just did not look appetizing at all. It was long and weird looking. It was a nice day all around.

Thursday 13

I'm going to do a random thoughts Thursday 13 today because I am doing a healthy 3 day cleanse and today is my first day. I usually talk or write about food, but that is not the case today. So here is some randomness from me.

1. I love the beach so much. The air, the smell, the sand, the water, the sound of the waves crashing.
2. Is it because I'm a pisces that I love the ocean so much?
3. I'm going to AZ next week for a couple days and hopefully can see a high school girlfriend while there.
4. I'm going to knit a hat today. It'll keep my mind off other things.
5. I love my cats so much. They quietly woke me up this morning.
6. I wish my boyfriend lived closer. Long distance really sucks.
7. I love buying my toiletries from drugstore.com
8. I hope my cousin Cindy does well today, she's having knee surgery.
9. This picture makes me laugh. This is tomato p0rn! I found this tomato at the ranch market last week.

10. It doesn't take much to make me smile. It's the small things in life that often are so sweet and so funny.

11. I need to wash the tile floors.

12.I'm conflicted about the MJ circus. I feel very badly for the children and their loss, but there is so much to be upset about otherwise. And the family should be paying the bills. Since when do you look to someone else to pay for your family's final plans?

13. I hope I don't get headachey or grumpy in the next 3 days. I'm going to really try to be not let it affect me.

THIRTEEN POSITIVES ABOUT
MITCHYPOO

The idea for this post came from The Gal Herself, who listed things she was good at. Since so many of us concentrate on our faults and flaws and weaknesses and peccadilloes, it was a refreshing read. And so I am stealing it. I encourage everyone else to steal it. Looking at yourself objectively and liking what you see is a natural high.
  1. I love animals. I've always had a soft spot for them and it doesn't matter what kind of animal although I'm partial to cats and dogs and hippos. You know that kid who always brought home a stray animal~ that was me.
  2. I'm crafty. I've always loved to learn new things and I love craft. My favorite craft now is knitting of course, but I love to paint and bead, and, you name it crafty and i love it.
  3. I'm a great cook. My Mamacita says that she is a recipe cook, but I can cook anything and without a recipe. It's true. I can take any ingredients and make a meal.
  4. I can bake homemade bread. From scratch, not a machine although the machines are cool too. I also make homemade pasta. I also used to make bagels, crackers, hotdog buns.
  5. I have nice handwriting. People comment on it.
  6. I quit smoking. If you are a smoker, you know that this is difficult. To quit. But I did, and cold turkey. It's all or nothing for me a lot of times.
  7. I work well under pressure. I've had jobs where sometimes there is a lot of pressure or deadlines to work under. I've always been able to get through these times, it kind of motivates me.
  8. I'm loyal. I pride myself on it.
  9. I still love to learn. I should be a perpetual student because I love to learn about things. I want to know more. If I don't know how to do something, I want to learn how to do it.
  10. I am empathetic. When I was active in church they discussed that everyone has a gift and I believe that this is my gift, although truthfully, it causes me some pain sometimes. I try to see the good in it.
  11. I love old people. When I was young, in grade school I liked to go to the nursing home or convalescent center to visit the old people. I would ask my Mamacita to take me down there. I always saw really cool things in older people.
  12. I'm smart. I have an Associates degree, I'd like to someday continue my education formally, but I truly believe that some of the smartest people do not have a paper degree. They have a life learned education. I'm not an Einstein, but I maybe could have joined Mensa.
  13. I'm creative. I think it's a talent and positive thing to be creative and I'm glad that I can see something and see how to create that thing or how to improve something. You need imagination to be creative. That's why I love knitting because I determine what I create and how it looks.

Thursday 13

I have an Ayurveda appointment today. Ayurveda is the ancient form of health care from India. It has been practised for over 5000 years but is just now getting a little more well known in the United States. I have been seeing my practitioner, Eleni, for almost a year and I love her and everything I learn about Ayurveda. She is not Indian by the way. She is very interesting actually. She is from Australia, with Greek nationality and married to an American. She has been a Godsend to me. My list this week is 13 things about Ayurveda and why I love it.

  1. It's natural, based on nature and how our bodies work naturally.
  2. Everyone is an individual and has a body type that relates to nature. There is your basic "prakriti" or constitution. They call it your Dosha and there are 3 basic doshas, Pitta, Vata, and Kapha.
  3. Each body type has qualities that relate to nature. The basic doshas relate to Earth, Air and Fire.
  4. Ayurveda believes there are things we can do daily to improve our health such as, oiling your body. They suggest you use an oil for your dosha and before showering you should oil your body from head to toe, doing self massage. I've done it, it's very relaxing and does make you feel wonderful.
  5. Other daily habits they suggest are exercising, meditation, using a neti pot, scraping your tongue, eating a large leisurely lunch, resting after meals, resting on your left side after eating and the oiling.
  6. Ayurveda says you should eat with the seasons and eat as natural as possible.
  7. Ayurveda treats the whole body. Not just the physical, but the emotional. It all relates. Emotions can affect your health.
  8. They use herbs and natural remedies for common ailments. For instance, I've suffered with migraines for years. So I was instructed to take a quart a day of feverfew tea for 30 days straight. Feverfew is an herb, a dried green leaf, it looks like oregano and I did do this and I am happy to report that my migraines/headaches are reduced very dramatically! I still get them every now and then, maybe once a month, compared to getting them 3-4 times a week, and sometimes daily. It's totally remarkable and it was so easy.
  9. They use certain spices for your health and because of taste. Certain tastes help your health. A big one for me is turmeric, I use it everywhere I can in cooking and I take a capsule of turmeric daily. I made the capsules myself and I take it because turmeric helps digestion and also improves the health of your skin.
  10. Kitcheri. It's a type of indian style dish that has whole grains in it and is easily digestible. I love it because it's comfort food for me now and because it's versatile and because I actually like the taste of it.
  11. Yoga is a part of Ayurveda, they are connected, but you can do one without the other. I do some yoga, but it's not a definite part of my practice yet.
  12. I had some pretty significant stomach problems for over 6 months before seeing Eleni. We worked on my digestion with some herbal supplements and my diet, and taking a yogurt drink. I mixed plain yogurt with fresh ground ginger, pumpkin pie spice and honey or agave and I drank that twice a day. My stomach issues also went away after a while of this treatment.
  13. I've lost weight. Since seeing Eleni I've lost about 30 lbs. The weight is a symptom of my body imbalance and I'm working on that. When you get in balance, the body loses the weight because the body knows what is a natural weight for you. It's also empowering to be able to lose the weight.
I hope you are intrigued. Could it help you? Is it a better way to live? For me it is. I'm healthier and I only have to take one medication now only because there is no other alternative for my hypothyroid.

Thursday Thirteen #48

Wow, it's been awhile since I've posted for Thursday Thirteen but Citizen Jane inspired me and I'm stealing her theme too! It's about guilty pleasures and I have many. So here we go..
Thirteen Guilty Pleasures of Mitchypoo
  1. magazines...I'm addicted. It's not a good mail day unless i get a magazine. It can be a knitting mag, fashion, gossip, doesn't matter.
  2. Tom Jones. Can't help it, I love him after my Mamacita dragged me to one of his concerts a long time ago.
  3. Krispy Kreme donuts. I'm glad they closed, the one near me, I don't know where one is available and that is a good thing.
  4. Sorbetto's from Starbucks. It's only a guilty thing because it's full of sugar.
  5. In-n-Out burgers. Well, actually a Cheeseburger! With grilled onions....and fries! And a chocolate shake!
  6. Watching bowling...I actually use to do this all the time with my Father. We also watched bull fighting. The bull fighting seems so repulsive now.
  7. Yarn. It's a guilty pleasure because I love it so much and love to buy it and smell it and touch it and feel guilty now if I do because of finances.
  8. Perfume. I have quite the collection of perfume, who needs that much scent...me I guess.
  9. Makeup. Again, nobody needs that much makeup but I love it, the new shades, the new formulas, etc.
  10. Amy Winehouse. I love her music, she is SOOOO talented, but my GOD, what a trainwreck.
  11. Chocolate. I like white, milk or dark, but Lindt is my favorite. I don't eat much of it, but once in a while I have to have chocolate.
  12. Candy~so bad for me, but sometimes Mamacita gets me a box of sweet tarts or something tart.
  13. Narine~my lovely stylist. She's the best and worth every dollar.

Thursday Thirteen #42

Thirteen Things about Mitchypoo
  1. I had to go to the Dr. today and found out that I did not gain ANY weight over the holidays!
  2. My last weigh in was December 14 and so I am very happy about not gaining. I was exactly the same. Well, actually to be technical I was .6 or .8 of a lb. less!
  3. But I do need to find a meeting because I'm not sure they are going to start again the 3rd week of January at work.
  4. I just created my 1st sock pattern and it may be published in an online knit magazine this month!
  5. I have a surprise for all my knitterly friends coming up very soon.... oh, the excitement! I wish I could tell you now...
  6. I will have some big changes coming up in February that I don't want to tell you about yet. Sorry to be so secretive. (But it doesn't matter because I'm convinced I'm the only one that reads this.)
  7. I've been sick and off work for 2 days and I didn't blog once until now.
  8. The beginning of this year 2008 so far has been wonderful. I've had a lot of things come together and things are moving in a positive direction for me.
  9. I've found that I love listening to podcasts! Ever since I got an ipod Nano from Mamacita. It's sooooo cool!
  10. I'm really afraid that Amy Winehouse is going to meet an early demise and I'm so sad because she's sooo talented. Poor thing.
  11. I wish the Writer's Strike would end. I feel bad for them and I'm getting tired of reruns.
  12. I like the new show Cashmere Mafia. It's like a TV version of Sex and the City. The theme music sounds strangely familiar. I don't know how they get away with it. But the characters are likable.
  13. How odd that I also like the perfume Cashmere Mist by Donna Karan. It's luxurious and subtle and I like how it smells later in the day, you move a certain way and it's still pleasant.

Thursday Thirteen #41

January 2 is the 1 Year Anniversary of us losing my sweet baby Simba.

Thirteen things about my beloved Simba that Mitchypoo misses.

1. She lived for 14.5 years. She was raised by me from 3 days old. She was like my baby.

2.She was like a little mother. She mothered this pink pig. It was her baby.

  1. 3. She was a good watch dog. Very protective of me. Protective but not mean.

4. This was our Christmas card one year, I love this pic because she looks like she's smiling and I believe she did smile.

    5. This is on our trek from MN to CA. She was really good in the car. She slept a lot, and loved to look outside when she was awake.

    6. She was so pretty and she loved the farm. She would just sit there after making her rounds to make sure everythin was OK. Her coat was always quite shiny.

    7. This was one of her last days. She would just sit on my lap like a baby and want me to hold her and she'd just stare at me and want comforting. Poor baby.

    8. She would sleep with me in bed, often with her head on the pillow. She dreamed a lot and would move her legs like she was running.

    9. Her last Christmas with us and the day before she got sick.

10.She was a hugger. She would squeeze you.

11. I miss her so...
12. She'll always be in my heart.
13. There will never be another like her.

Thirteen things about Christmas that Mitchypoo loves!

  1. Christmas carols, music. Tra la la! It's just cheery and it makes me feel good.

  2. People are festive and decorate their houses with bright shiny things!

  3. It tends to bring out the child in you. People wear funny hats to give out presents, people sing and act goofy. It gives you an excuse to be a goof.

  4. Egg nog! I love egg nog even though it's not exactly good for you or health conscious. But I'll have mine hot and with some whiskey in it, thank you!

  5. Tamales. It's the only time we really eat them, unless someone we know makes them at another time during the year. They are so good!

  6. The Christmas Tree. It's so beautiful in the house, with the lights low and the Christmas lights on and the angel on top. So festive and pretty.

  7. People are sentimental. I like how it usually brings out the best in people. They go out of their way to make someone else happy. Or they get so excited to find just the right gift for someone and delight in watching them open it.

  8. You get to be with family. In our busy hustle bustle lives, sometimes we don't get to spend as much time as we want with family but over the holidays we get more time together.

  9. Time for reflection. Time to think of why we really celebrate Christmas or the holidays and what it means to us. And being at the end of the year it makes you think of your past year and what you want in the coming year.

  10. You get to write out a wish list and tell people what you would really like to receive! How cool is that!
  11. Peanut brittle! It's the only time of the year that we make it and it doesn't feel like Christmas without it.
  12. Seeing snow and winterscapes. It's pretty and all....but I'll pass on living in it! I'm a CA girl thru and thru.
  13. Watching children, how excited they get when they have a present to unwrap and then they rip open the box and have to play with it.........NOW!! I love the look on their faces when they are in awe of something and so excited they don't know what to do with themselves!

Thirteen things about Sinterklaas that Mitchypoo finds interesting!

I have a new friend in the Netherlands and she was telling me about their holiday traditions. She told me about Sinterklaas, which peaked my curiousity and then I realized that this should also be my tradition as I am Dutch. She is my people! I heard of some of this in Minnesota but I didn't realize it was Sinterklaas. So for your enjoyment... shamelessly taken from http://www.wikipedia.com/

  1. Sinterklaas (also called Sint-Nicolaas in Dutch (pronunciation (help·info)) and Saint Nicolas in French) is a holiday tradition in the Netherlands and Belgium, celebrated every year on Saint Nicholas' eve (December 5) or, in Belgium, on the morning of December 6. The feast celebrates the name day of Saint Nicholas, patron saint of, among other things, children.

  2. It is also celebrated to a lesser extent in parts of France (North, Alsace, Lorraine), as well as in Luxembourg, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Croatia, Romania, the Czech Republic and the town of Trieste in Italy. The traditions differ from country to country, even between Belgium and the Netherlands.

  3. In the Netherlands, Saint Nicholas' Eve, (December 5) is the chief occasion for gift-giving. The evening is called pakjesavond ("presents' evening"). Traditionally, presents are carefully wrapped, and are therefore called surprises. Also, presents are traditionally accompanied by a poem from Saint Nicholas.

  4. Sinterklaas is the basis for the North American figure of Santa Claus. It was during the American War of Independence, that the inhabitants of New York City, a former Dutch colonial town (New Amsterdam) which had been swapped by the Dutch for other territories, reinvented their Sinterklaas tradition, as Saint Nicholas was a symbol of the city's non-English past.[1] The name Santa Claus is derived from older Dutch Sinte Klaas.

  5. The Sinterklaas fest celebrates the name day of Saint Nicholas (280-342), patron saint of children. Saint Nicholas was a Greek bishop of Myra in present-day Turkey and became the patron saint of children based on various legends that include resurrecting children from death and saving them from prostitution.

  6. Sinterklaas has a long white beard, wears a red bishop's dress and red mitre (bishop's hat), and holds a crosier, a long gold coloured staff with a fancy curled top. Sinterklaas carries a big book with all the children's names in it, which states whether they have been good or naughty (zoet of stout) in the past year.

  7. He also rides a white horse (Schimmel-meaning "white horse") called Amerigo over the rooftops. In Flanders (Belgium) the horse is sometimes called "Slecht Weer Vandaag", meaning "Bad Weather Today". This name is of recent creation and was introduced by the VRT television series "Dag Sinterklaas" written by Hugo Mathyssen (1993). In the series Bart Peeters visits Sinterklaas (Jan Decleir) in his castle and finds out that Sinterklaas had gotten a new horse and couldn't think of a name. When Zwarte Piet (Frans Van der Aa) entered Sinterklaas' winter castle, Sinterklaas immediately asked if Zwarte Piet knew a name. Not having heard the question, Zwarte Piet said "Slecht Weer Vandaag", commenting on the weather. Sinterklaas thought Zwarte Piet was actually naming the horse, and the name stuck.

  8. Zwarte Piet
Sinterklaas is assisted by many mischievous helpers with black faces and colourful outfits, modelled after 16th century Spanish clothing. These helpers are called Zwarte Pieten (Black Petes) in Dutch (see below for names in other languages). During the Middle Ages, Zwarte Piet was a name for the devil. Having triumphed over evil, it was said that on Saint Nicholas' eve, the devil was shackled and made his slave. Although the character of Black Pete later came to acquire racial connotations, his origins were in the devil figure. This racialisation is reflected in the reworking of the characters' mythos. From about 1850, Pete was said to be an imported African servant of Saint Nicholas. Today however, a more politically correct explanation is given: Pete's face is said to be "black from soot" (as Pete has to climb down chimneys to deliver his gifts). Nevertheless, the tradition has been accused of being racist, and attempts have been made to introduce Gekleurde Pieten (Coloured Petes), who are coloured blue, red, etc., instead of black. This phenomenon of "Coloured Petes" was introduced nationally in 2006. The explanation given for this was that "Sinterklaas passed through a rainbow with his boat".[2] This effort was widely criticized in the media.[citation needed]

  9. Traditionally Saint Nicholas only had one helper, whose name varied wildly. "Piet" or "Pieter", the name in use now, can be traced back to a book from 1891[3]. The idea that Sinterklaas has not one but many helpers was introduced by Canadian soldiers who had liberated the Netherlands during World War II and helped organise the first post-war Sinterklaas celebration.[citation needed]
In other regions where Sinterklaas is celebrated, like southern Belgium or Northern France, Saint Nicholas has different companions.

  10. Sinterklaas traditionally arrives each year in November by steamboat from Spain, and is then paraded through the streets, welcomed by cheering and singing children. Invariably, this event is broadcast live on national television in the Netherlands and Belgium. His Zwarte Piet helpers throw candy and small, round ginger bread-like cookies, kruidnoten or pepernoten, into the crowd. The children welcome him by singing traditional Sinterklaas songs. Sinterklaas also visits schools, hospitals and shopping centres. After this arrival all towns with a dock have their own intocht van Sinterklaas (arrival of Sinterklaas)

  11. Traditionally, in the weeks between his arrival and the 5th of December, before going to bed, children put their shoes next to the chimney of the coal fired stove or fireplace, with a carrot or some hay in it "for Sinterklaas's horse", sing a Sinterklaas song, and will find some candy in their shoes the next day, supposedly thrown down the chimney by a Zwarte Piet or Sinterklaas himself. However, with the advent of central heating children put their shoes near the boiler or even just next to the front door.
Typical Sinterklaas candy is the first letter of the child's name made out of chocolate, Speculaas chocolate coins, a figurine of Sinterklaas made out of chocolate and wrapped in painted aluminium foil, and coloured marzipan shaped into fruit, an animal or some other object.

  12. Children are told that Black Pete enters the house through the chimney, which also explains his black face and hands, and would leave a bundle of sticks (roe) or a small bag with salt in the shoe instead of candy when the child had been bad.
Children are also told that in the worst case they would be put in the gunny sack in which Black Pete carries the presents, and be taken back to Spain, where Sinterklaas is said to spend the rest of the year. This practice, however, has been condemned by Sinterklaas in his more recent television appearances as something of the past. Typical of that time was also the fact that the saint would have the names of every child written down in either his "golden book" (if a child had been good), or his "black book" (if a child had been bad) - very much like Odin's ravens reporting everything in the world to him. The standard joke would be that initially Sinterklaas would not be able to find the name in the "golden book", trying to scare the children. With modern views on child psychology, these practises have been abandoned as well.

  13. Traditionally Saint Nicholas brings his gifts at night, and Belgian and many Dutch children still find their presents on the morning of December 6th. Later in The Netherlands adults started to give each other presents on the evening of the 5th; then older children were included and today in that country sometimes even the youngest on the evening of December 5 (Saint Nicholas' eve), known as Sinterklaasavond or Pakjesavond (present evening). After the singing of traditional Sinterklaas songs, there will be a loud knock on the door, and a sack full of presents is found on the doorstep. Alternatively - some improvisation is often called for - the parents 'hear a sound coming from the attic' and then the bag with presents is "found" there. Some parents manage to "convince" Sinterklaas to come to their home personally.

Presents are often accompanied by a simple poem, saying something about the child or with a hint to the nature of the present.
When the presents are too bulky in size or when the quantity of presents is too large, they have to be snuck into the house while the kids are distracted.
Another aspect of "pakjesavond" are the small poems people make. When children become too old to believe in Sinterklaas, they will be introduced to a different form of entertainment during this night. People will write small personal poems for friends and family usually accompanied by a small gift or candy. This way it is also entertaining for parents and other adults. Students usually write teasing and embarrassing stories for each other. But this is expected and are received in good spirit.

So Happy Sinterklaas to all of you! I hope your holidays, however you choose to celebrate include great holiday traditions. I'd love to hear what your traditions are.
